'Error while running apache2ctl graceful' when running certbot

Please fill out the fields below so we can help you better. Note: you must provide your domain name to get help. Domain names for issued certificates are all made public in Certificate Transparency logs (e.g. crt.sh | example.com), so withholding your domain name here does not increase secrecy, but only makes it harder for us to provide help.

My domain is: samgreenwood.ca (and subdomains)

I ran this command: sudo certbot

It produced this output:

Action 'graceful' failed.

My web server is (include version):

OS: Debian bullseye 11.9

My hosting provider, if applicable, is: Linode

I can login to a root shell on my machine (yes or no, or I don't know): yes

I'm using a control panel to manage my site (no, or provide the name and version of the control panel): no

The version of my client is (e.g. output of certbot --version or certbot-auto --version if you're using Certbot): certbot 2.11.0

Welcome @SamGreenwood

What was the complete certbot command you ran?

And, can you explain what kind of server samgreenwood.ca is handled by? Because it doesn't look like an Apache server to me. Based on HTTP tests to that domain and the error about port 80 in use it looks like something else is on that port.

I get the error no matter what subcommand I run. I've also tried reintalling Certbot.

Hosted on Linode using Apache

systemctl for Apache2:

You have Apache but it isn't starting.

Let us see what is on port 80. Would you show output of this

sudo netstat -pant | grep -i listen | grep -Ei ':80|:443'

Replace netstat with ss if you don't have it

Well, I asked because I wanted to know which subdomains you were handling in this request. There are multiple aspects to a successful solution.

Having to repeat questions just makes the whole process take longer.
