Certbot Failed to get registration by key

Hello,
I am running into an error when running certbot on Debian stretch installed from backports.

certbot certonly --authenticator standalone

asks for the email address and then after a moment, returns this message:

An unexpected error occurred:
The server experienced an internal error :: Failed to get registration by key

the log file shows the “Failed to get registration by key” error message an stack trace.

I see that now, thanks!
I checked immediately when it first happened and it looked like everything was ok then, but it must not have been updated yet.
