Certificate expiration notice e-mail unsubscribe links could use more clairity

It's not clear, from that text alone, what happens when I click the unsubscribe link in the last line. Making what that link offers explicit would be a good improvement.

  • Does clicking immediately and irrevocably unsubscribe? (Is it a one-click unsubscribe? Or do you get taken to a page where you click to confirm and more clearly explains what your unsubscribing from?)
  • Does it just unsubscribe from e-mails about this specific certificate, or does it unsubscribe from all notifications about all certificates associated with this account?

I've been afraid to click the link because of the uncertainty involved. Clearer text would be a good thing. I'd float some replacement text, but ... I don't know what clicking it actually does. :wink:

It’s a one-click unsubscribe right now. If you unsubscribe, you won’t receive further notifications for any certificate belonging to an account with the same email address. There’s currently no way to resubscribe either, short of using a different email address. (Some email providers like Gmail let you use something like youremail+someword@example.com as a way to get a new address without having to actually register a new account).

More fine-grained control over that process is planned at some point, e.g.:

Would something like “Note: Clicking this link will unsubscribe you from expiration notifications for all certificates associated with this email address.” work as an addition?

Thanks for the feedback :tada: @pfg’s answer is correct (Thanks @pfg!)

I opened a Boulder pull request to add a warning that the unsubscribe is final and one-click. I’m hesitant to add too much wording to the email but I’m open to suggestions if you think the warning I’ve proposed isn’t as clear as it could be.
