Not even. If they're from a european university, their IT department has access to certificates via their NREN and GEANT. They're not free in every country, though. They use an intermediate GEANT OV RSA CA 4
that's exclusively for their use (Sectigo issued). The university CA is globally trusted, there.

Good. Ask your university IT how to get a certificate. They'll probably tell you the same, that you need a domain. But they can also give you one.
Adding to this advice...
When dealing with Universities: please be aware that unless the University has registered their domain onto the Public Suffix List (or received a Rate Limit exception from LetsEncrypt), any certificates you request will be applied to the domain-based rate limits. That means your certificates/requests would be competing with the university's IT department, as well as all academic, faculty and student certificates for the shared rate limits. Because of this, University students/faculty/staff should always reach out to the IT department to check on their current policies and for help on coordinating their requests.
