I have a server that would not renew the keys due to not finding
my_domain/.well-known/acme-challenge/my_key
Using the actual domain and key. I since added a txt record at Vultr but by this time I had already tried and failed 5 times. Now I get:

There were too many requests of a given type :: Error creating new authz :: too many failed authorizations recently: see https://
Please see the logfiles in /var/log/letsencrypt for more details.
The Let’s Encrypt cert has not been renewed!
That rate limit will reset in an hour. Try again in an hour and you should be fine.

If you want to test in the mean-time (or for future use to avoid the rate limit error) our staging environment has more generous rate limits to enable this sort of testing/troubleshooting.
