Private Server SSL connection

Just wondering if I use letsencrpyt to generate certificates on a server that is behind a firewall (has internet access, but the server is private) as I need SSL encrypted connection for Filemaker clients, will this work or does the server need to have a public DNS ?

As it’s only accessible from a private LAN, should I make the DNS record the private IP address ?

It’s fine to create certificates for servers that are not publicly accessible. It just means that you need to use DNS validation rather than HTTP validation. Have a look at https://letsencrypt.org/docs/challenge-types/ to see the difference.

With DNS validation, you do need to have a real registered domain. So, for example, if your private Filemaker server is filemaker.example.com, you would need to be able to create a publicly visible TXT DNS record under _acme-challenge.filemaker.example.com.
