Encrypt: Install certificate failure: Unable to set certificate name

I have a V-server with ca 24 domains and some domain aliases. Ubuntu 14.04 with Plesk 12.5.
Every domain uses Letsencrypt and they all worked fine for half a year. Suddenly i get this warning. I cannot renew the cert.for only one domain.

Fehler bei der Installation des SSL-Zertifikats von Let’s Encrypt: Invalid response from https://acme-v01.api.letsencrypt.org/acme/new-cert: Error creating new cert :: too many certificates already issued for exact set of domains: example.de.
Type: urn:acme:error:rateLimited.

Sometimes i get: Encrypt: Install certificate failure: Unable to set certificate name

I googeltt a lot and compared this domain to the other working domains and found that only for this domain the csr part is not there.
An other possibility would is that in plesk the domainname is Example.de and not example.de with small first letter.
I’m not sure if it must be so and caust the error. i cannot rename it with plesk without deleting the domain and restore it.

The error ist since Juny 17th 2017 when the last Letsencypt cert had expired.
i switched the domain from https to http to keep it working.
First i thought i just have to wait for a renewal because of the limited number of domains/IP but now i dont know how to continue to isolate the error.

Excuse my bad english and thanx a lot in advance!

Hi @PaulE,

This error indicates that you have already obtained at least 5 certificates in the past week for this domain name. If you can tell us the real domain name, we can show you these certificates in the public Certificate Transparency log. This probably means that there is a problem with your Plesk setup where certificates are being obtained successfully but not used. The “Install certificate failure” is probably responsible for this because it probably means that the certificate was obtained but could not be installed or activated on your system. Unfortunately, such a certificate still counts against the rate limits.

Is it possible that you are still running a very old version of Plesk from 2015?

It looks like this error was relatively common in the past but has (I hope!) been fixed in subsequent versions of Plesk.

Thank you very much!

I use Plesk 12.5 with microupdate 67 on Ubuntu 14.04 with all updates.

The real domainname is kjp-bremicker.de

81.169.240.158

h2516116.stratoserver.net

All other domains on this server are not affected and run fine with Letsencrypt.

You can see here that you have successfully issued a large number of certificates:

https://crt.sh/?Identity=%kjp-bremicker.de&iCAID=16418

So the problem is that Plesk fails to configure your web server to make use of these certificates, which then leads you to try to get another certificate, with no different result.

I would suggest asking over on the Plesk forums

You can tell them that you have the “Install certificate failure: Unable to set certificate name” which was supposedly fixed in the past and that apparently this error still continues to occur for you for some reason.

Thank you very much!

I try to get help from the Plesk Forum…

7 days later i disabled the (temporarily installed) self signed cert and reinstalled the Letsencrypt cert for the one domain again.
It works.
https://crt.sh/?q=kjp-bremicker.de
Now the question remains why Plesk could not install the certificate earlier and as many attempts were made which led to a blocking.

I hope these daily attempts are now finished and it will not be blocked again (rate limit of 5 certificates per domain per 7 days).
I will report.
