Certbot has problem setting up the virtual environment

Hi everyone,

today I got an E-Mail that my certificate is almost outdated. After stopping the webserver I executed manually the letsencrypt_renewal. This worked the last times. Now I get the following error message.

Automated renewal failed:

You are using pip version 8.0.3, however version 9.0.1 is available.
You should consider upgrading via the 'pip install --upgrade pip' command.

Certbot has problem setting up the virtual environment.

We were not be able to guess the right solution from your pip
output.

Consult Get Certbot — Certbot 2.7.0.dev0 documentation
for possible solutions.
You may also find some support resources at https://certbot.eff.org/support/ .

I googled that error message, but didn't get that far. System is up to date, all versions are up to date. Also checked other entries in the git, but none of them helped.

Any idea from your side?

Some said, that this might be related to memory problems, but also here, everything is fine.

Thx in advance!

from first glance, it looks like a lot is being updated.
and part of that requires updating OpenSSL
which is being recompiled but fails.

try updating OpenSSL first then retry letsencrypt.
apt-get update
or yum or whatever you use to update your system.

P.S.

This may also be at play:
You are using pip version 8.0.3, however version 9.0.1 is available.
You should consider upgrading via the ‘pip install --upgrade pip’ command.

Thanks for your help!

openssl is already the newest version from the 1.0.1. I also tried to upgrade the pip, via the command. Same here, no effect. Already newest version. :frowning:

OS is a debian, btw.

Sorry for the late reply. Just want to share what solved my problem.

For the past monts I used the standard “letsencrypt-auto” function to renew my certificates. This worked out very well until the error in my first post.

Solution: Switched completely to the certbot function did the job. Should have done this earlier. https://certbot.eff.org/

I think this is a collateral effect of reinstalling somehow, because letsencrypt-auto and Certbot are the same program (letsencrypt being the old name for this application), and letsencrypt-auto automatically updates itself to the newest version.

I have the same problem.
I have latest slackware, latest all the packages, no luck.
Was working for two years without problems…

Please help!
