Certbot failed to authenticate some domains

Please fill out the fields below so we can help you better. Note: you must provide your domain name to get help. Domain names for issued certificates are all made public in Certificate Transparency logs (e.g. crt.sh | example.com), so withholding your domain name here does not increase secrecy, but only makes it harder for us to provide help.

My domain is: netbox.air-band.net

I ran this command: certbot --nginx -v

It produced this output:
Saving debug log to /var/log/letsencrypt/letsencrypt.log
Plugins selected: Authenticator nginx, Installer nginx

Which names would you like to activate HTTPS for?
We recommend selecting either all domains, or all domains in a VirtualHost/server block.

Certbot failed to authenticate some domains (authenticator: nginx). The Certificate Authority reported these problems:
Domain: netbox.air-band.net
Type: unauthorized
Detail: 185.214.220.2: Invalid response from https://netbox.air-band.net/.well-known/acme-challenge/f3CDXk5UnH1jVUwJKsdX9JGv48gtXikrbAr9V-INPSc: 404

Hint: The Certificate Authority failed to verify the temporary nginx configuration changes made by Certbot. Ensure the listed domains point to this nginx server and that it is accessible from the internet.

My web server is (include version): nginx version: nginx/1.18.0 (Ubuntu)

The operating system my web server runs on is (include version): Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS

My hosting provider, if applicable, is: N/A

I can login to a root shell on my machine (yes or no, or I don't know): Yes

I'm using a control panel to manage my site (no, or provide the name and version of the control panel):
No

The version of my client is (e.g. output of certbot --version or certbot-auto --version if you're using Certbot): certbot 2.7.2

I have checked with the let's debug and all 3 tests pass so I'm at a loss as to why this is not working.

First, I see you have been getting certs from ZeroSSL for the past year. Did you use this same Certbot setup to get those certs?

Hello Mike,

No I didn't use certbot, I've been doing them manually every 3 months, hence trying to use certbot and lets encrypt today.

Okay, it's a fresh start then. Thanks. The --nginx plugin usually works very well. But, sometimes odd settings in nginx config can cause trouble.

Can you upload the config.txt file that results from below command? If you can't upload then paste its contents but add 3 backticks before and after like shown

sudo nginx -T >config.txt 2>&1

A capital T is essential. The file should be large

If pasting, 3 backticks like
```
contents
```

I am pretty sure the trouble is from the server_name in your port 80 server block just being generic. Changing it to match the domain for the cert should work.

If you really want a default block to redirect then create a new server block like below instead. Although, you may need to change your listen statement format because I am pretty sure ipv6only=off can only be done once per nginx per port. Ask if you want help with that.

So, your port 80 server block like this

server {
    # Redirect HTTP traffic to HTTPS
    listen [::]:80 ipv6only=off;
#    server_name _;
    server_name netbox.air-band.net;
    return 301 https://$host$request_uri;
}
