Authorization valid only for 3 months

In early 2016 authorizations were valid for 9 months (if I remember correctly). In middle of 2016 it changed to 3 months only.

Was that announced anywhere, reason behind it etc?

I liked longer period because it required less frequent DNS updates (in case of dns based validation)
