Server w/multiple domains - Wrong Cert

I'm kind of surprised by this - and explains most of my confusion.

But I'd still like to find where "NameVirtualHost" exists and what is to the right of that tag...
try:
grep -ir NameVirtHost /etc/apache2/

I don't need to grep for it (and please...one more time, CentOS 6 does NOT use /etc/apache2/, instead it uses the old-style tried-and-true /etc/httpd/) - that is in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf - first the relevant section for brevity, then the entire httpd.conf which is other than noted exceptions exactly the way the package delivered it:

###
# ADDED 20170827, cfs3
#  Force NameVirtualHost before Include
###
#
# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
NameVirtualHost 199.175.53.13:80
#NameVirtualHost *:443
#

Next post an attempt at the entire httpd.conf...

Part 1:

#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
#     whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
#     of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
#     same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/etc/httpd" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/etc/httpd/logs/foo.log".
#

### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#

#
# Don't give away too much information about all the subcomponents
# we are running. Comment out this line if you don't mind remote sites
# finding out what major optional modules you are running
ServerTokens OS

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
# mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation
# (available at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfi
le>);
# you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
#
# Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
#
ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"

#
# PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
# identification number when it starts. Note the PIDFILE variable in
# /etc/sysconfig/httpd must be set appropriately if this location is
# changed.
#
PidFile run/httpd.pid

#
# Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
#
Timeout 60

#
# KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
#
KeepAlive Off

#
# MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
# during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
# We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.
#
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100

#
# KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the
# same client on the same connection.
#
KeepAliveTimeout 15

### Section 2: 'Main' server configuration
#
# The directives in this section set up the values used by the 'main'
# server, which responds to any requests that aren't handled by a
# <VirtualHost> definition. These values also provide defaults for
# any <VirtualHost> containers you may define later in the file.
#
# All of these directives may appear inside <VirtualHost> containers,
# in which case these default settings will be overridden for the
# virtual host being defined.
#

#
# ServerAdmin: Your address, where problems with the server should be
# e-mailed. This address appears on some server-generated pages, such
# as error documents.  e.g. admin@your-domain.com
#
ServerAdmin root@localhost

#
# ServerName gives the name and port that the server uses to identify itself.
# This can often be determined automatically, but we recommend you specify
# it explicitly to prevent problems during startup.
#
# If this is not set to valid DNS name for your host, server-generated
# redirections will not work. See also the UseCanonicalName directive.
#
# If your host doesn't have a registered DNS name, enter its IP address here.
# You will have to access it by its address anyway, and this will make
# redirections work in a sensible way.
#
#ServerName www.example.com:80

#
# UseCanonicalName: Determines how Apache constructs self-referencing
# URLs and the SERVER_NAME and SERVER_PORT variables.
# When set "Off", Apache will use the Hostname and Port supplied
# by the client. When set "On", Apache will use the value of the
# ServerName directive.

# DefaultLanguage and AddLanguage allows you to specify the language of
# a document. You can then use content negotiation to give a browser a
# file in a language the user can understand.
#
# Specify a default language. This means that all data
# going out without a specific language tag (see below) will
# be marked with this one. You probably do NOT want to set
# this unless you are sure it is correct for all cases.
#
# * It is generally better to not mark a page as
# * being a certain language than marking it with the wrong
# * language!
#
# DefaultLanguage nl
#
# Note 1: The suffix does not have to be the same as the language
# keyword --- those with documents in Polish (whose net-standard
# language code is pl) may wish to use "AddLanguage pl .po" to
# avoid the ambiguity with the common suffix for perl scripts.
#
# Note 2: The example entries below illustrate that in some cases
# the two character 'Language' abbreviation is not identical to
# the two character 'Country' code for its country,
# E.g. 'Danmark/dk' versus 'Danish/da'.
#
# Note 3: In the case of 'ltz' we violate the RFC by using a three char
# specifier. There is 'work in progress' to fix this and get
# the reference data for rfc1766 cleaned up.

### Section 3: Virtual Hosts
#
# VirtualHost: If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
# IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
#
# Please see the documentation at
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/>
# for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
#
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
# configuration.

#
# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
#NameVirtualHost *:80
#NameVirtualHost *:443
#
# NOTE: NameVirtualHost cannot be used without a port specifier
# (e.g. :80) if mod_ssl is being used, due to the nature of the
# SSL protocol.
#

#
# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for requests without a known
# server name.
#
#<VirtualHost *:80>
#    ServerAdmin webmaster@dummy-host.example.com
#    DocumentRoot /www/docs/dummy-host.example.com
#    ServerName dummy-host.example.com
#    ErrorLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-error_log
#    CustomLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-access_log common
#</VirtualHost>

This is still unexplained...

Sorta, but it only happened when the names were added to the hosts file. When I removed them from the hosts file (remmed out, actually) and restarted apache, that error went away.

I'm an old guy, and heading off to bed, to be ready to face this mess in the morning.

httpd.conf Part 1 shows:
Listen 80
NameVirtualHost 199.175.53.13:80

But where does it have
Listen 443
NameVirtualHost 199.175.53.13:443
Can’t find them anywhere.

Try adding them adjacent to their similar entries - as:

Listen 80
Listen 443

NameVirtualHost 199.175.53.13:80
NameVirtualHost 199.175.53.13:443

Yes. Where NameVirtualHost was in the stock remmed section you note in Part 2 was after the conf.d directory was Included, causing no end of errors telling me I needed to declare NameVirtualHost. As I noted in my comments, I moved it above the Include solely to make sure it was declared before httpd.conf included all of the other config files.

It doesn't. If you note, "#NameVirtualHost *:443" is remmed out in the piece I brought above the Include.

I can easily add them...

#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80
# Added 20171005, cfs3
Listen 443
~~~~~
###
# ADDED 20170827, cfs3
#  Force NameVirtualHost before Include
###
#
# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
NameVirtualHost 199.175.53.13:80
# Added 20171005, cfs3
NameVirtualHost 199.175.53.13:443
#NameVirtualHost *:443
#
And an epic fail:
# /etc/init.d/httpd restart
Stopping httpd:                                            [  OK  ]
Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs
                                                           [FAILED]
Reverting to rem out two added lines.
Edit: Hang on...ssl.conf (which is included) contains the Listen 443 directive, so removing only that line from httpd.conf (leaving NameVirtualHost line) and restarting...
Restart ok. But samples.lofcom.com still using www.bobedwardsradio.com cert.
#     Per default this exportation is switched off for performance reasons,
#   SSL Protocol Adjustments:
#   The safe and default but still SSL/TLS standard compliant shutdown
#   approach is that mod_ssl sends the close notify alert but doesn't wait for
#   the close notify alert from client. When you need a different shutdown
#   approach you can use one of the following variables:
#   o ssl-unclean-shutdown:
#     This forces an unclean shutdown when the connection is closed, i.e. no
#     SSL close notify alert is send or allowed to received.  This violates
#     the SSL/TLS standard but is needed for some brain-dead browsers. Use
#     this when you receive I/O errors because of the standard approach where
#     mod_ssl sends the close notify alert.
#   o ssl-accurate-shutdown:
#     This forces an accurate shutdown when the connection is closed, i.e. a
#     SSL close notify alert is send and mod_ssl waits for the close notify
#     alert of the client. This is 100% SSL/TLS standard compliant, but in
#     practice often causes hanging connections with brain-dead browsers. Use
#     this only for browsers where you know that their SSL implementation
#     works correctly.
#   Notice: Most problems of broken clients are also related to the HTTP
#   keep-alive facility, so you usually additionally want to disable
#   keep-alive for those clients, too. Use variable "nokeepalive" for this.
#   Similarly, one has to force some clients to use HTTP/1.0 to workaround
#   their broken HTTP/1.1 implementation. Use variables "downgrade-1.0" and
#   "force-response-1.0" for this.
SetEnvIf User-Agent ".*MSIE.*" \
problem solved.
Slept in (old guys need their rest), awoke prepared to face the day! Remmed the entire VirtualHost container from ssl.conf (after backing it up, of course), restarted Apache and...
Same problem. No worse, no better. I did not revert the changes, that container is still remmed-out in ssl.conf.
I was thinking a bit about the order of the Include; from everything I read, the files in conf.d are included in alphanumeric order. I postulated that if I switched the order of the load, making the samples configs load after the BER configs, I should see exactly the opposite situation; the bobedwardsradio.com site should then be trying to use samples' certs and fail, while samples should load without problem. So I renamed to xsamples.lofcom.com.conf and xsamples.lofcom.com-le-ssl.conf, and restarted Apache.
They both work.
This makes absolutely no sense to me, so I'm going to have some aspirin and espresso and come back to this when I'm not ready to beat every computer in the place with a baseball bat.
No sleep for the weary!
I can’t believe this is still ongoing.
What exactly is the error message and have you looked at every line in the conf.d directory that contains:
virtualhost
servername
serveralias
to ensure the files are as expected.
If you would like to tar them up and send me a message with a link to that tar file I would really like to go over them with a fine tooth comb!
There isn't one. They both work perfectly. If I rename the sample configs back so they load before the BER configs, samples fails trying to load BER's certificate. If I rename them back so samples' configs load after the BER configs, they both work. If you review the two sites now, they both load properly. For no d*mned reason I can grasp.
And, of course, the real issue is going to be adding a third cert for a different site...lord only knows what will happen then!
Not yet, but will be walking though all of them after a double cappuccino. For giggles I moved 00_default.conf out of the directory temporarily & restarted apache, and they are both still working. So long as samples is renamed xsamples, they load their proper certificates. I can not explain it.
Two things come to mind as I review this thread.
  1. Order matters.
  2. Problems are not always obvious.
And they both seem to apply well here.
On #1 I always tell that to my kids - You cant put your shoes on before you put on your socks; order matters! I think this is why I’ve always created one large conf file with all the vhosts in them - so that I can control the order.
On #2 If a problem was obvious, it wouldn’t be much of a problem. But what may not be obvious to one may be obvious to another. I would be glad to put a second set of eyes to those conf files.
Wait. The conf.d folder is included into the httpd.conf alphanumerically. "ssl.conf" (which was apparently created when I set up the self-signed certificate) is alphabetically later than "samples.lofcom.com.conf," which means SSL wasn't set up when samples loaded! Bloody hell...could it be that simple? Renaming it to xsamples dropped it not below BER, but below ssl.conf! Since all of the httpd setup directives are in ssl.conf, what if I renamed it to 000_ssl.conf, rename xsamples back to samples and restarted the server...
Yeah, still working fine as expected. So I create a brand-spankin'-new Let's Encrypt certificate for www.seniormomentproductions.com and the non-www (both together this time), and it works fine, which we'd expect even if I hadn't renamed the ssl.conf file, since "www" is below "ssl."
Son of a...well...insert your own expletives here. :wink:
In the old days, everything was in httpd.conf, so this was never an issue...the VirtualHosts block was always at the dead bottom, and SSL setup was always well above, so this would never have occurred. The standard way now (seperate files in a config folder Includ-ed into the httpd.conf) is great for isolating a problem confined to a single domain configuration file, but a pain in the arse when dealing with the system as a whole.
you could do a mix of old and new.
replace the current single httpd.conf entry:
Include conf.d/*.conf
with
Include conf.d/domain1.conf
Include conf.d/domain2.conf
Include conf.d/domain3.conf
Include conf.d/domain4.conf
and still keep the vhost files separate while maintaining your preferred order.
True, but then renaming them works just as well, so long as I remember "Order Matters." I wanted to put them all back in the httpd.conf, but after reading here apparently certbot has...issues...with that.
I renamed the default 001_default.conf so it would load after 000_ssl.conf, and if this nonsense happens again I'll add more zeros! :wink:
