so it was fail2ban
i guess now i need to figure out how to get fail2ban to block the spammers and hackers but not legit auths?

Does the iPhone work now?

yes, both the iPhone and thunderbird sent emails just fine

the faili2ban jail is set to be 'aggressive'
i'm thinking that when i was testing and setting this up i triggered it (logging in without authenticating a couple times maybe?)

but you're right, at least i know have an immediate quick fix (workaround, if you will) until i can finesse the f2b jail
