Join us and learn about certificate chains!

Hello community members!

On Friday, September 17, 2021 we are talking about certificate chains with the one and only Aaron Gable, Boulder Dev extraordinaire. Here’s a link to the invite: Let's Encrypt Chains - Sep 17 | Hopin

We have a few questions already crafted for Aaron to answer (those questions are below) but we would love to get further questions you may have about certificate chains and the upcoming changes. Community leaders, if you have seen a lot of the same question pop up about the chain changes, please share those with us here too.

And join us the day of at the link above (please register - registration is open for 100 people only!) to have many of your questions answered!

  • Overview of Subscriber, Intermediate, and Root certificates
  • What’s changing in the certificate chain?
  • How do browsers interact with the certificate chains?
  • How does OpenSSL interact with the certificate chains? Why does this pose a problem for older versions of OpenSSL?
  • What platforms are compatible with Let’s Encrypt certificates?
  • What is ECDSA? And how is it different from RSA?

Best,
JP

PS- we issued 2 billion certificates! So cool! https://twitter.com/letsencrypt/status/1435981637762813955

Very cool idea! Looking forward to it!

Also, perhaps is EdDSA an interesting topic! Of course not in use currently, but I don't see a reason not to talk about the future

Other question tho:

I clicked on "Join Event" and got a link with an add to calendar thingy, does that mean I registered? I mean, I didn't have to fill in any info about myself, e-mail or something

Who is the target audience for this event? (so that I can frame question/topic suggestions from that perspective.)

Hi Osiris! I added EdDSA as a "this would be fun to talk about if we have time" kinda topic! There's a lot to talk about just with RSA and ECDSA and the change and our chains - but this would be a fun one to cover!

If you clicked on "Join Event" and have used Hopin before/are logged in, it automagically registers you. If you don't have a Hopin account, you will get this pop-up that you can use to register.

Target audience is fairly broad (we will invite folks via social media as well), but likely people that have some technical background and would be interested in learning more about certificate chains. Thus a bit of background on what each type of certificate is before we get into talking about our chains and what they mean for the Web/users.

Great question!!

Thanks!

Hmm, I didn't get that pop-up on my mobile phone. I'll try again

Edit: got it!

Ah yes, timezones! Hopin shows the time in the local time zone, but doesn't actually say that? For me @ CEST it's perfectly timed, just after work

This event has been pushed back by a day to Friday, September 17.

Yes, I saw it too. For me, that's unfortunate, as it means I'd have to follow the stream from the train with spotty cellular coverage at times..

I'm so sorry!! We originally had it scheduled for a Friday and didn't quite change the dates in our minds. We moved it back to the original date and time!

I am also working on recording it so we can have it in perpetuity! I will definitely post the link here after the event. Stay tuned!

Hi,

Thanks again for the great presentation.
Is it me, or was the last point
" * What is ECDSA? And how is it different from RSA? "
not addressed?

Welcome to the Let's Encrypt Community, Georg :slightly_smiling_face:

You make a good point. I'll add something here.

ECDSA is a different type of crypto than RSA that tends to produce much smaller ciphertexts.

@jple

Your conclusion got cut off in the presentation from my end. Not sure about others or recording.
