The “no renewals” messages would be a lot more useful if they just included the
information about expiration dates which is clearly available, something like
/etc/letsencrypt/live/xxx/fullchain.pem expires feb-25-2017 renew after feb-01-2017

Thanks for the suggestion, @ddyer. Have you tried the relatively new certbot certificates
feature? Would it give you the information you want, and would you still want that to be a default part of the certbot renew
output?
I can find no mention of this “certificates” feature, so if it exists it is well concealed.
Yes, I’d like to have it automatically included - I’d like to glance at the log (which normally
says nothing interesting happened) and see when interesting activity is supposed to occur.
