I’m a little bit confused. I want to dynamically create subdomains for a domain.
will adding a subdomain to a certificate with --expand count to the rate limit? If no, is the only option a paid wildcard certificate?
thanks for the clarification.

Hi @drunk,
Yes, adding certificates with --expand
does count against rate limits. (The CA doesn't even know that you used --expand
; it just sees it as an additional certificate request.) Dynamically adding subdomains on a large scale or regularly is not likely to be compatible with Let's Encrypt's rate limits.
Soon, Let's Encrypt will also begin offering wildcard certificates for free.
