Help
Until a month or so ago my website was partly managed by an outside company who did all the certificate licencing and helped when I needed it etc. This was a one man band who has disappeared. The websites SSL certificate has now expired but I don't know how I can reactivate it as I have no log in details with the previous provider. Will the website disappear with no certificate (you can tell I am not very IT literate!)
Please fill out the fields below so we can help you better. Note: you must provide your domain name to get help. Domain names for issued certificates are all made public in Certificate Transparency logs (e.g. crt.sh | example.com), so withholding your domain name here does not increase secrecy, but only makes it harder for us to provide help.
No, the website will not disappear. However, people attempting to visit it will get errors, because (as you've said) the certificate is expired, and has been for about a week now.
Where is this website hosted? Whoever's handling that is likely going to be your best point of contact to resolve this issue.
Thank you for the quick response. I don't know where it is hosted - the chap who seemed to be doing it has literally disappeared without a trace. Is there a way I can find out where it is hosted please?
There probably is, but I'm afraid can't help in this regard--perhaps some other community member can fill in. But I do see that your domain registration will expire in about a week, on 12 June, so you'll need to make sure that's renewed as well.
The domain is registered with Vision ICT Ltd. You should contact them to regain control over the domain.
Domain is delegated to Cloudflare. You will have little chance to regain access, but that's not a problem, since you can register new account and delegate the domain to a different set of nameservers (if you wish to continue using Cloudflare).
The website seems to be WordPress running on a (likely) virtual machine in Google Cloud. If you have access to admin panel you should do a full backup immediately, as it will get deleted if the Cloud account is not paid off. You have virtually zero chance to regain access to the Google Cloud account, but it should be possible to re-deploy the website somewhere else if you have backup and able to download assets/theme/etc.
The expired certificate is the least of your problems. Any decent hosting provider usually makes getting a new one either trivial or fully automatic.
