Our lead tech set that up @schoen quite a while ago when we started using LetsEncrypt. I don't know why he choose to do it that way. We've simply been using that over and over since he came up with it. It's worked for a few years now until around last month.
Sorry, I don't even understand what you're doing when you open these files with nano. Are you copying data out of them into something else? Pasting data into them from somewhere else? Something else?

Yes that's the case @schoen. I copy and paste each one into the SSL settings of a particular domain within our hosting account for that domain.
meh, basically the same idea as me!
