WHM/cPanel unfortunately does the same thing with the cprapid.com domain, due to admins not being prepared with a working forward hostname, I guess. It's Sectigo's problem in that case though, they are the ones automatically issuing certificates for those servers.

I'm curious to know - are many people using certificates for these ip-based hostnames? If so, what for?
@jsha It's definitely not something we recommend and likely isn't widely used across the Linode platform, but with the switch from members.linode.com to ip.linodeusercontent.com we wanted to make sure anyone who did use the default domain could continue to do so if they require it for their workload.
