Issue:could not start HTTPS server for challenge: listen tcp :443: bind: address already in use

I'm trying to renew my cert before expiration in a about a week or so via these instructions:

And getting this error: error presenting token: could not start HTTPS server for challenge: listen tcp :443: bind: address already in use

Do I need to kill a process before running the renew command?

Step #2 should have stopped Apache [which should be what is using port 443].
hmm...
Maybe we should confirm what is actually using port 443.
Try showing us:
ps -ef | grep -v grep | grep -Ei 'apache|nginx|http'
netstat -pant | grep -i listen | grep 443
