That does seem like a pretty constant position on their part. However, they’ll probably allow you to use it yourself on a VPS, as other VPS hosts do.
It seems from earlier comments in this thread that they do allow it on a VPS.
My other hosting it was 2 clicks to install LetsEncrypt! HostGator just don’t want to do it.
I’ll admit - I’m pretty disappointed with HG right now - in addition to this moneygrab (yeah I get they are a business) but they decided out of the blue this weekend to add a Caching Plugin to the must-use section of all my wordpress sites. They are not a customer friendly company.
I am beginning to see why a consultant I work with is no longer recommending HG to their clients. It’s a shame - they used to be a great company. It will be interesting to see how they respond when WP makes SSL mandatory as reported later this year.
I moved to a VPS on hostgator and I’m in the process of getting certbot working. I’m not a pro so I’m getting a ton of errors but it seems with root access I should be able to. Right now I’m trying to figure out where I change my virtual hosts file.
Here is the guide https://thedavidweb.com/install-lets-encrypt-free-ssl-hostgator/ to install Let’s Encrypt SSL in Hostgator hosting using the website Zerossl.
No, you don’t have to pay for this service, it is a 3rd party service, and its completely free, most of the time Hostgator gives you free SSL along with your hosting account during the time of purchase, but it can only support one domain, but using this service you can install SSL for any number for domains in your HostGator hosting.
I believe there’s still a fee unless you pay for the VPS (which gives you access to rWHM so you can manually install certificates).
Otherwise, you’ll have to pay the $10 installation fee every time you want to install / update a certificate on shared hosting & reseller accounts.
I’m probably gonna use HG’s 1-time free SSL installation and leave once my hosting period expires.
i have a shared hosting account on Hostgator and i use let’s encrypt SSL with it for free.
Hi,
I too use Letsencrypt SSL certificate for my site. I had installed the free SSL on 3 websites in Hostgator account.
The HostGator team don’t provide the active support for the installation process, however, they are always available to guide the user in case of any difficulty.
I too faced the same situation, as my site was live and had a decent amount of traffic.
I managed to install the certificate on my website immediately after installation the site stopped working on mobile devices.
I was also getting the not fully secure message on the bar of the browser. This issue was due to nonconversion of http URL to https.
I have noted down each and every step Installation of Letsencrypt on Hostgator account. This will help those who are converting the existing non SSL site to https.
I also prepared a draft for how to renew Let’s encrypt certificate for Hostgator account.
The process is almost same for any hosting providing which are offering CPanel.
If you are feeling any difficulty while implementing it. Feel free to contact me. @https://twitter.com/Weblogsetup1?lang=en
Thanks for writing this up. I'm sure it will help people quite a bit. Do you know if this works with every Hostgator plan now, or only with certain plans? Previously we heard that Let's Encrypt could only be used by certain Hostgator subscribers, but it would be great if that's no longer the case (and your article could help).
I didn't understand the recommendation
If you are selling online or having a high traffic website, I would recommend you to buy a paid SSL certificate as it comes with warranty protection.
I have heard this recommendation before, but it doesn't make much sense to me. This warranty protection relates to cases where a site visitor was defrauded as a result of a browser accepting a misissued certificate, right? If so, have we seen cases where a fraudulent site used the same CA as the legitimate site in order to obtain the fraudulent certificate? Furthermore, have we ever seen a case in which a user successfully made a warranty claim as a result of online fraud? Is there evidence that users correctly understand the purpose of the warranty or that they consider it when choosing which online sites to use?
My impression is that these warranties were mostly devised in the 1990s based on a somewhat different model of the CA's role and incentives than what has subsequently happened in practice. For my part, I haven't seen recent cases where the warranty was shown to be useful for the purposes that it was originally meant to serve.
Yes, It works with all shared hosting plans offered by Hostgator.
It also work with Fastwebhost.
I think this will be useful for every Hosting provider who are offering CPanel with their hosting package.
Some more discussion about the warranty issue in this thread:
Hello, I cannot see the SSL/TLS option. This is my panel: https://pasteboard.co/HfNg8pf.png
Are you sure is available for all plans?
Thanks!
If you would like to install a Let’s Encrypt in hostgator, you must have a vps or dedicated server. Let’s Encrypt is available for vps and dedicated server only and not really installed to lower than vps or dedicated server.

I have 6 sites on hostgator’s shared plan and was looking how to install lets encrypt on it also. There is no way without Paying 10$ for each domain name, and the worst part is that every three months I will have to pay again for renewing the certificate.
I looked around for another reputable hosting server that supports lets encrypt and one of my friends suggested me siteground .
I am considering moving to it because is too expensive to maintain 6 ssl certificates on hostgator.
also the vps are too expensive for me.
If you find any solution that will help me also to avoid moving my sites to another host I would appreciate it.
Seems HostGator has finally joined the free SSL movement…!
HostGator now automatically adds a free SSL certificate by Let’s Encrypt to all old and new customers.
And the renewal after 90 days is FREE of charge not $10 as some have said in their answer here (at least in my own experience).

These day no one would buy SSL certificate, thanks to Let’s Encrypt has changed the SSL market. All big hosting providers are forced to give Free SSL option or risk losing clients.

@awebsolutionsUK, it's not really appropriate to arbitrarily promote an individual hosting provider in an old thread about a different hosting provider.
However, if your hosting provider supports Let's Encrypt, we do have a web to use this forum to let people know about it:
You can post there, ideally with a link to an announcement and/or documentation of how it works on your hosting provider, and a volunteer can add your service to the list.
Thanks!
