Help - Can't figure out which rate limit I've exceeded

Hi All,

Firstly, Let’s encrypt is great. I’ve had no issues until now, hence this is my first post.

I am trying to issue a cert for alpacaexpo.co.nz - but I have hit a limit, but can’t figure out which one or how to solve it. From memory, a few days ago a tried maybe 3 or 4 times to get it issued, but we had a redirect on the domain as the primary domain has been updated recently. The next day I removed the redirect and attempted to get another cert, only to hit a rate limit. As most of the limits are only 3 hours long, I tried the next day and got the same error, I tried today with the same error also - rate limit.

The reason I need a cert on this domain is that it won’t redirect due to a security warning, so I want to issue a cert for the alpacaexpo.co.nz domain and then implement the redirect so that users who had bookmarked the old URL get easily redirected to the new one without any security warning as they will have bookmarked the old https URL.

I’m no server admin, so don’t have shell access. I’m using the HTML interface for Plesk Onyx v17.8.11running on CloudLinux 7.7

After reading the page on rate limits, I can’t figure out which one I’ve hit so I don’t know how long I should wait until trying again. I’m reluctant to try again in case I keep extending the limit I’ve hit. There is a Failed Validation limit of 5 failures per account, per hostname, per hour, but I have waited about 24 hours before trying again just to be told I’ve hit a limit, so it can’t be that one?

This is the error Plesk gives me:
Invalid response from https://acme-v02.api.letsencrypt.org/acme/new-order.
Details:
Type: urn:ietf:params:acme:error:rateLimited
Status: 429
Detail: Error creating new order :: too many certificates already issued for exact set of domains: alpacaexpo.co.nz,www.alpacaexpo.co.nz: see https://letsencrypt.org/docs/rate-limits/

Advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

James

Hi James,

That error is the Duplicate Certificate rate limit, which resets after seven days. This indicates that you previously successfully issued five certificates with the domain names you’re currently trying to issue a certificate for.
