For HTTP validation, do I have to validate both apex domain and FQDN at the same time in order to issue certificate for the FQDN?

For example, I want to issue a DV for pic.example.com.
Do I have to validate both example.com and pic.example.com?
or I only have to validate pic.example.com?

For Let's Encrypt, you would only need to validate this domain.
