how do i go about this.i use ubuntu 14.04 lts in virtual box and the host machine is windows 10

Did you check if your provider allows open port 80? Or is there a local firewall?

If Letsencrypt can't connect your server, you have to use dns-01 - challenge.

Ask your provider. If your provider blocks port 80, it's impossible to use http-01 - validation. So you have to use dns-01
