Can I create the certificate before the migration?

Hi,

I'm planning to switch from Webflow to our own hosting. I'd like to know if I can create the certificate at our new hosting before migrating the DNS. Or should I first point the DNS to the new hosting and then create the certificate?

Cheers!

You can.

You'll have to use dns-01 validation (and then either automate it, or switch back to http-01)

OR
You can copy the current cert [and key] to the new server.

I don't own the certificate, the supplier owns it.

Do you control the DNS zone for that domain name?

Sorry, I didn't understand.

Yes, I do.

There are several ways to authenticate.
The two most used are:

  • HTTP-01 requires responding to an HTTP Request at the IP of the name requested
  • DNS-01 requires entering a TXT record into the DNS zone.

Then the simplest thing to do is:

  • run through the cert request manually
  • choose DNS authentication
  • place the token into the DNS zone [manually]
  • obtain this one-time cert to bridge the transfer

Then after the IP has been changed, you can obtain a new cert using HTTP authentication.
[and set that up for automatic renewals]

Supplemental note: DNS-01 challenge is the only challenge that supports issuing certificates containing wildcard domain names.
