My Rationale
I have accidentally submitted non-sensical markup, in one of my topics:
Every alternative Discouse instance, that I have ever utilised, permits this.
there was a spammer that post then edit to bypass any filters few years ago. not sure it'd still around here though.
@orangepizza, shouldn't Akismet catch that?
You get edit privileges after some number of posts, I think whatever gets you to Trust Level 1. Yeah, it's annoying, but seemed to be the best compromise.
@petercooperjr, is it the duration, during which one is able to modify their submitted content, time-limited?
Sorry, I don't personally know the exact settings.
@petercooperjr, all I meant to ask is whether one loses the ability to modify submitted content after a certain duration, or whether it's indefinitely permitted at this instance.
Topics will be locked eventually, and then you can't edit old posts anymore. Not sure if it's also locked before that - you can edit for some time after the post, as long as you have the trust level (I can still edit 20 day old posts, so I think it only blocks you once the thread is locked anyway).
I believe the reason why edit privileges were moved up to TL1 instead of TL0 was that retroactively introduced spamlinks (through post edits) could bypass the spam filter via some exploit that confused the filter system. This used to be a problem for quite some time until edits had to be disabled on the TL0 level, unfortunately.
